Suzanne Collins's novel was published on 14 September 2008. Color Force bought the film rights in March 2009 and produced the film with Lionsgate. Gary Ross directed. Collins wrote the screenplay with Ross and Billy Ray. James Newton Howard wrote the score. It opened in the United States on 23 March 2012.

Gary Ross did not return for the sequel. Francis Lawrence directed Catching Fire, both parts of Mockingjay, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, and Sunrise on the Reaping. James Newton Howard scored those films as well.

On 1 November 2012 Lionsgate said the last novel would be two films, released on 21 November 2014 and 20 November 2015. Peter Craig and Danny Strong wrote both. Philip Seymour Hoffman, who played Plutarch Heavensbee, died on 2 February 2014. He had finished Part 1 and had about a week of Part 2 left. The release date did not move.
